Pinup 101: The Look - The Perfect Red Lip

We covered how to achieve cat-eye/winged liner nirvana last week and as a follow up, I'm discussing the Red Lip today - the combination of the two creates a perfect quick Pinup look for the pinup on the go!

One of my favorite resources, and I just found it since the move, is a book, "Retro Makeup" by Lauren Rennells. This book features looks from each decade with step by step guides showing how to achieve each look. Going for an authentic vintage style? Check out this book!

However, for an every day/easy pinup or maybe something more modern and retro-inspired I opt for a blend of styles.

Lips:
  1. Start with a liner in a color matching your shade or a neutral (skin tone) liner.
  2. To achieve a consistent, near perfect cupid's bow I draw an "X" at the cupid's bow or "V" in the top lip.
  3. Continue to outline the rest of the lip as you normally would extending the lines to the corners. You may overdraw slightly outside the lip line to create a fuller look, if you wish.
  4. Fill in lips with liner.
  5. Add your lip color by coloring over the lip lined areas. I often prefer to use a lip brush to apply my lipstick as it makes the lipstick last longer, but you may also apply straight out of the tube whichever is your preference.
  6. Blot your lips with a tissue by folding in half and pressing down.
  7. Take another tissue and remove a layer. Take the thinner tissue and place over lips. Apply a dusting of translucent powder over the tissue against the lips.
  8. Your lips are ready to go! The last step preserves the lips creating a matte stain-like effect for all day wear! Touch up as needed to achieve the desired color effect.
Please note, steps 6 and 7 can be omitted if you are running short on time, you'll just have to reapply later in the day. Also, if wearing a liquid lipstick (such as the Kat Von D liquid lipstick) omit the normal liner and start with clean lips with a bit of foundation around the edges.

My lipstick look achieved using the steps above!
